Executive Summary

Aug 2017
TRENDS

Butter and margarine in Ireland experienced a decline of 1% in current value terms in 2017. There was a significant contrast in terms of the sales within the category, with butter seeing sales improve considerably, whereas margarine and spreads saw its sales drop. The shift in consumer preference back to butter had a significant impact on the sales of margarine as well as the demand for other substitute products such as oils and fats, most notably the surge in demand for coconut oil.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Kerry Foods Ltd led butter and margarine in 2017 with a value share of 28%. The company has two of the top five brands in the category with Dairygold and Low-Low. However, the company’s actual sales are in decline due to the fall in demand for margarine products. Despite this the company continued to innovate with products such as Dairygold Butter Sticks which is a butter product packaged into three different sections to make it more convenient for consumers to place in a butter dish and to measure and keep the product fresher for longer.

PROSPECTS

Butter and margarine is anticipated to decline at a value CAGR of 1% at constant 2017 prices over the forecast period with sales dropping to EUR138 million in 2022. The decline in value sales is set to continue with a fall in demand for margarine products and also due to the ever increasing presence of private label.
