Although cafés/bars showed promising recovery in 2021, the speed of recovery varied. Bars/pubs, which was one of the most severely impacted categories in 2020, showed double-digit current value growth in 2021, as restrictions eased and people largely returned to their normal lives, and although was unable to recover to the pre-pandemic level of sales, saw a massive rebound.
Starbucks Corp remained the strong leader in cafés/bars in 2021, and the only player to hold a double-digit value share. The company has been rapidly expanding its store network, reaching a total of over 5,000 stores by the end of 2021, and accounting for a fifth of all specialist coffee and tea shops in China.
McDonald’s has completed the transition of McCafé from standalone outlets/counters with separate seating areas to an in-house coffee brand that sells coffee beverages at a regular counter. This move has helped McDonald’s to streamline its coffee business operation.
In tier-1 and top tier-2 cities, where the coffee culture is more developed and widely accepted, consumers are shifting from drinking coffee primarily as a social activity to consuming coffee for convenience and out of habit. These consumers look for convenient options that offer high speed of service and/or good value for money.
Even after the pandemic is largely under control and people return to their normal lives, the penetration of delivery is set to increase further. The habit of ordering coffee online and having it delivered has stayed even as cases of the virus and restrictions ease.
The pandemic resulted in significant changes in consumers’ lifestyles. Home seclusion during the lockdowns and the increased time spent at home relative to pre-pandemic led to increasing demand for at-home consumption of coffee.

Cafés/Bars
This category encompasses all establishments where the focus is on drinking (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages). While a wide variety of snacks and full meals are offered, it is not uncommon for consumers to only order a drink. As a general rule, establishments deriving 50% of their income or more from the sale of drinks are included here.
