India was hit with a second wave of COVID-19 just as the country was recovering in the initial few months of 2021. With the second wave being more severe, restrictions on movement and social distancing norms were reimposed, which directly impacted leisure and recreational places such as cafés/bars in India.
With restrictions on movement in most cities and the working from home model gaining popularity, many people, mainly young adults, chose to move back to their home towns. This movement impacted the cafés and bars located in cities, as they lost their target consumer group.
Cafés/bars are generally located in commercial areas with high footfall, where operating costs are high. With these businesses suffering because of a lower customer base and less scope for food deliveries, they also had to incur high operating costs such as rents, manpower and service costs.
The pandemic impacted consumer foodservice in more ways than one. Consumers were reluctant to step out of the safety of their homes, as they feared contracting the virus.
With the vaccination drive being successful, the economy is expected to recover in 2022 and grow further in the rest of the forecast period. This recovery is also expected to be reflected in the performance of cafés/bars.
Because of the high cost of operation for cafés/bars during the pandemic, many businesses closed down permanently. With the expected reduction in pandemic-related regulations and life getting back to normal, these outlet closures will lead to a huge gap in the market.

Cafés/Bars
This category encompasses all establishments where the focus is on drinking (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages). While a wide variety of snacks and full meals are offered, it is not uncommon for consumers to only order a drink. As a general rule, establishments deriving 50% of their income or more from the sale of drinks are included here.
