As the government introduced a national lockdown, social distancing, the closure of non-essential businesses, smart working and stay-at-home measures, custom in a channel overwhelmingly dominated by eat-in trade was severely reduced between March and May 2020.
Specialist coffee and tea shops registered the lowest losses in cafés/bars in terms of value sales and transactions over 2020. Due to the impact of COVID-19, coffee and tea specialists had to adapt and develop new formats.
In 2020, chained players underwent restructuring as operators tried to cope with the serious disruption to trade due to the pandemic. Although, the category overall witnessed heavy outlet closures, the percentage drop was lower than in all other consumer foodservice channels, except limited-service restaurants, over 2020.
Over the forecast period specialist coffee and tea shops is set to develop in two main directions. Firstly, new and newer format coffee places are expected develop in the market, such as coffee corners and coffee points.
Cafés, both chained and independent, is set to see a steady rebound in value sales at constant 2020 prices. However, cafés is not expected to return to the 2019 sales level before the end of the forecast period.
Bars/pubs is also set to register a relatively moderate recovery over the forecast period. Both chained and independent bars and pubs are projected to show a satisfactory performance, but sales levels are not expected to return to the 2019 level by the end of the forecast period.
