Car rental remains underdeveloped in Bulgaria

Car rental remains a very underdeveloped travel category in Bulgaria, with sales remaining low despite strong growth towards the end of the review period. Among the principal reasons for this are Bulgaria’s compact size and fairly well-developed public transport, including comprehensive private coach transfers and regular rail services linking all of the country’s major towns and cities at least twice daily.

Ride sharing apps remain banned, supporting potential growth in car rental

Travelling by taxi remains very common in Bulgaria and the country’s taxi drivers are practically a national institution. Indeed, the taxi lobby remains a powerful voice in local politics in most parts of the country and while regulation of the taxi industry remains stringent, there is a certain degree of protection afforded to legitimate taxi companies so as to ensure high levels of service remain viable.

Unfavourable conditions for car rental likely to hinder growth

The currently incipient state of car rental in Bulgaria can also be linked to the underdeveloped state of the country’s regions. Outside of the country’s four largest cities of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas, economic activity remains in a state of depression.
