Popularity of Uber and car-sharing affect growth in car rental sales

Car rental in the Netherlands is facing increasing competition from alternatives such as Uber. Many inbound travellers to Amsterdam who are used to booking an Uber at home are keen to turn to this service instead of renting a car.

Leisure car rental suffers from the Netherland’s small size, whereas business car rental benefits from companies leasing cars to offer to employees

Car rental overall saw weak growth in 2019 and is expected to continue to see limited growth over the forecast period. There is limited demand for leisure car rentals, as, due to the short distances between major cities, inbound tourists mostly rely on public transport (especially trains).

Independent companies still popular but global brands on the up, particularly amongst business rentals

The car rental category is relatively fragmented in the Netherlands, with independent players still popular amongst the Dutch in particular and commanding a dominant share of value sales.
