South Africa’s car rental market is mature, with a number of global brands having established a presence in the country. The industry is driven by its good road infrastructure to many key tourist destinations. Although leisure car rental is important to the category, it remained driven by business car rental due to the consistent bookings from corporations. The increasing number of business travellers attending events such as exhibitions, conferences, workshops and meetings also boosted value sales within the category in 2017. Business car rental accounted for 53% of value sales within car rental in 2017, with the remainder coming from leisure bookings, which usually reach peak levels during the summer season when the tourist influx is at its highest. As a result, car rental in South Africa grew by 8% in current value terms in 2017 to reach ZAR6.9 billion.
As recorded during the review period, business car rental is expected to continue driving the category’s growth over the forecast period due to bookings from business travellers attending exhibitions, conferences, workshops and meetings. As a result, car rental is predicted to increase at a value CAGR of 2% at constant 2017 prices over the forecast period.
