One particular factor affected all soft drinks categories in 2018, namely the weather. While in 2017 the summer was extremely hot and long, which affected the supply of tap water in major urban areas, effectively boosting demand for soft drinks, the summer in 2018 was cool and wet, thus having an adverse effect on demand.
In spite of the unfavourable weather in 2018, carbonates posted solid growth in the on-trade, where demand was primarily driven by promotional activities and new launches and sales supported by a small increase in consumers’ disposable incomes, with many being willing to spend this in the on-trade. Manufacturers seized the opportunity to boost on-trade sales during the month-long FIFA World Cup, when many consumers visited on-trade establishments to follow the matches in the company of other fans.
Lemonade/lime was the fastest growing carbonates category in the off-trade at the end of the review period, primarily benefiting from the revival of the somewhat ageing Sprite brand, which was boosted by the launch of Sprite Cucumber, one of the most unorthodox flavour combinations in soft drinks overall. Although some consumers loved it, others hated it.
Coca-Cola HBC continued to dominate carbonates in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2018. Coca-Cola offers a variety of brands across carbonates.
Coca-Cola HBC also recorded the strongest increase in share in carbonates in 2018 in both volume and value terms. This can be mostly attributed to its Sprite and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar brands.
Sky and Cockta were the only regional brands present in carbonates in 2018. The producer of Sky, Sarajevski Kiseljak, has recently focused on Justice League-themed promotions, while for Cockta, Hercegovinavino looked to its “famous” past for inspiration, bringing back packaging designs that helped make it one of the most popular soft drinks during the ex-Yugoslav era.
