In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, packaged cheese responded well in 2020 as current value and volume sales rose notably. In contrast, unpackaged cheese responded negatively as consumers were afraid to purchase such products due to contamination fears.
Local consumers are expected to become increasingly aware of their health in 2021, largely in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The healthy living trend will encourage the consumption of cheese in general.
In 2021, Belarus will remain amongst the top cheese exporters globally, and the share of local brands on Belarusian retail shelves will be significant. The wide product assortment, presence of new product developments and frequent implementation of price discounts will allow local producers to retain their high share of current retail value sales in 2021, as consumers grow more willing to try new varieties of cheese.
Over the forecast period, cheese will remain highly fragmented as local cheese manufacturers are expected to maintain their current retail value sales and leading positions in 2022 and beyond. No new foreign players are expected to enter cheese in Belarus, which is due to saturation, strong competition and government support for local dairy manufacturers.
The economic repercussions of the pandemic will take some time to recover meaning many consumers will continue economising over the forecast period. This will therefore boost the sales of unpackaged hard cheese as this is one of the lower-priced product areas.
Growing competition between hard and soft cheese is likely to become especially visible in large cities, where soft cheese is widely available and accounting for increasing shelf space, thanks to the efforts of local manufacturers to actively develop cheese. More companies are expected to include soft cheese in their product portfolios, considering the growing consumer interest in this product type.
