Cheese performed well over the review period as availability and the product range both increased with the expansion of modern grocery retail formats. During this period the shelf space devoted to cheese exploded, whether on self-service or deli display shelves.
Retail value growth of cheese was below the review period average in 2018, primarily as a result of recent price trends, which witnessed declines across most cheese varieties. Cheese is increasingly competitive as most modern grocery retailing outlets now carry wide selections of cheeses from different manufacturers, displayed side by side, which is forcing players across the value chain to price against the competition as well as in the context of their own marketing strategy.

Dukat maintained its narrow lead in cheese in 2018. The company focused on expanding its product and brand range in cheese during the review period, managing several brands, including Sirela, Dukatela and Président.
The runner up to Dukat in cheese in Bosnia-Herzegovina is German manufacturer, Bayerische Milchindustrie (BMI) Group, which is almost entirely focused on cheese. It also succeeded in gaining share in cheese at the end of the review period.
