During 2015, sales of cigars were affected by significant increases levied in the rate of taxation during the early stages of the review period, which caused unit prices in the category to surge and retail volume sales to decline earlier in the review period. Steady volume growth was recorded over the second half of the review period, however, after retail volume sales declined in 2011 and 2012, mostly due to falling demand for cigars, the most prevalent category in cigars and cigarillos in Egypt.
As in cigarettes, Eastern Co also has a monopoly on the domestic manufacture of cigars in Egypt. In 2015, the company held a volume share of 76% in cigars, a decrease of four percentage points over the course of the year. Its key cigar brand is José Bartolo. Eastern Co also led cigarillos in 2015 with a retail volume share of 51%.
