While cigarettes saw sharp tax hikes during the review period, tax increases for cigars and cigarillos were considerably lower. This resulted in a reduced price differential between cigarettes and cigarillos. At the start of the review period, cigarettes carried a unit price of €0.1/stick, with cigarillos' unit price being double this level. By the end of the review period, cigarettes however carried a unit price of €0.2/stick, with this similar to the price offered by price fighter cigarillos. Consequently, some smokers traded up from cigarettes to cigarillos, at least occasionally. This supported growth in cigarillos' retail volume sales, with this continuing into 2015. Overall cigars and cigarillos saw 5% retail volume growth from a low base in 2015, with this in line with the review period CAGR.
Cigars and cigarillos is highly consolidated, with Henri Wintermans, Arnold André Cigars and Corporación Habanos together accounting for 79% retail volume share in 2015. Henri Wintermans leads with 34% share, with this company being a strong leader in cigarillos with 34% retail volume share in the year and also ranking second in cigars with 4% share. The company's Café Crème brand benefits established brand awareness and distribution.
