Cigars and cigarillos are being impacted by a number of long-term factors. The public smoking ban in place throughout the review period notably resulted in there being few places away-from-home where these products can be smoked at leisure. In addition, cigars and cigarillos appeal mainly to older consumers, with many of these giving up or cutting down as a result of health concerns. Cigars and cigarillos meanwhile have a fairly old fashioned image in France, with few young consumers beginning to smoke these products. Sales are meanwhile also being impacted by consumers economic concerns, with cigars regarded as a luxury purchase by many. Overall, cigars and cigarillos thus saw 4% retail volume decline in 2015 over the previous year, with this slightly sharper in comparison to the review period CAGR. Sharper decline towards the end of the review period was meanwhile to tax increases over the last three years of the review period.
Cigars and cigarillos is fairly consolidated. Scandinavian Tobacco led in 2015 with 30% retail volume share, followed by J Cortes, Seita and Royal Agio with 14-15% each. Together, these players accounted for a combined 75% share in the year.
