In 2015, cigars and cigarillos was heavily affected by the increase in tax on so called eco-cigarillos (price fighter cigarillos which includes some filter cigarillos), as these products were taxed for the first time at the same rate as cigarettes due to a new EU-directive that came into force on 1 January 2015. As a result, especially volume sales but also value sales of the whole category saw a strong decline in 2015, with price fighter cigarillos accounting for 14% of total volume sales of cigars and cigarillos and filter cigarillos for 37%.
Domestic manufacturer Dannemann Cigarrenfabrik continued to lead cigars and cigarillos in 2015 with a volume share of 19%, thanks to its strong presence in cigarillos. Dannemann is the only player in cigars and cigarillos which holds a double-digit volume share, mostly due to its popular Dannemann Moods brand, which accounted for a volume share of 15% in cigarillos in 2015. However, in 2015 the company was likewise affected by the strong decline seen in cigarillos due to new regulation and the ongoing health and wellness trend. Furthermore, the development in the commodity market continues to burden the manufacturer as in addition to price increases for tobacco, a poor harvest and currency fluctuations, the cost of packaging has also increased.
