Traditionally, Nigerians do not smoke cigars and cigarillos, with sales being limited to some Nigerians who have been abroad and remaining quite small in 2015, only reaching significant quantities in 2012. With the increase in the number of Nigerians travelling to Europe and North America, many of whom settled down but then returned home later, cigar smoking in Nigeria has increased in popularity strongly since 2014, with retail volume sales rising by 19% between 2013 and 2014. However, growth slowed strongly in 2015 as Nigeria’s relatively poor GDP growth, compared to the review period, resulted in weakened consumer spending power. In addition, the devaluation of the local currency relative to the US dollar also made imports of cigars and cigarillos more expensive.
Altadis USA Inc dominates cigars in Nigeria, recording a retail volume share of 66% in 2015. The company’s success can be attributed to its launch of popular mass market cigars in 2012, particularly Phillies and Hav-A-Tampa. Such brands are widely distributed and visible and are available not just through store channels such as supermarkets and small grocers but also kiosks, street/traffic channels and bars/clubs.
