Coffee is the most mature and largest non-alcoholic drinks format in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with the vast majority of adult consumers in the country having at least one coffee per day. Turkish or Bosnian coffee is the dominant variety consumed in households across the country.
The performance of coffee on-trade in Bosnia-Herzegovina is significantly more positive than off-trade. On-trade sales are dominated by espresso, followed by instant coffee, which appeals to a similar consumer base as off-trade: young consumers only getting into coffee.
Fresh ground coffee pods recorded strong growth in off-trade outlets in Bosnia-Herzegovina throughout the review period. This is a novel format introduced by Nestlé in cooperation with coffee machine manufacturer Krups that enables consumers to have their favourite on-trade coffee drinks at home.
The leading player within coffee remains Grand Prom, followed by a number of domestic and international players. Grand Prom is one of first players that managed to leverage expansion of grocery chains to achieve nation-wide availability, while using advertising to break through consumers’ habit of relying on locally popular small-shop coffee brands.
Grand Prom was also the fastest growing player in 2018. The company is increasingly diversifying its coffee portfolio to boost appeal among specific consumer segments, adapting both its product and promotional efforts to the preferences of its target audience.
Nestlé has pioneered instant coffee in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with its Nescafé range continuing to dominate sales, despite its relatively expensive price. Other players in instant coffee have repeatedly tried to compete by offering lower prices, but with limited success.
