The most dynamic categories in retail volume terms in 2021 remained fresh coffee beans and fresh ground coffee pods. These categories continued on from the success seen in 2020, when the will of consumer to replace the café experience at home pushed them to purchase fresh coffee instead of instant coffee.
Instant coffee continued to decline in retail volume and current value terms in 2021. The category started to decline in 2020 despite the attempts of the leading players to maintain volume growth through the launching of new novelties.
Competition in coffee as a whole continued to be based on the provision of discounts in 2021, as well as the launch of new products. Nestlé and Jacobs Douwe Egberts held onto their strong positions in coffee in 2021 due to the fact that instant coffee continues to dominate the market in volume terms, despite declining sales.
It is expected that coffee will continue to see healthy growth over the forecast period in retail volume terms. The main growth drivers are expected to remain the growing interest in fresh coffee and the growing coffee culture, with consumers becoming increasingly demanding of the products they choose to consume.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has pushed more consumers to reflect on their diet and lifestyle habits, but this is unlikely to have a significant influence on sales of coffee over the forecast period. Health and wellness categories such as organic fresh and instant coffee, fortified and reduced sugar instant coffee are expected to remain an underdeveloped niche.
It is expected that the development of new retail distribution channels will also influence the future of the category. The increasing search for convenience and value will continue to fuel the growth of stores positioning themselves as discounters.
