Convenience stores recorded solid sales growth in 2021, benefiting from the new wave of COVID-19 early in the year as consumers spent more time at home and relied on their local convenience store for supplies. Convenience stores are popular amongst Danish consumers for purchasing a wide variety of products, including snacks and beverages, and they continue to increase their offering of fresher and more premium quality products as consumers have become more health conscious over the review period as a whole and especially since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Whilst convenience stores in urban locations performed well in 2021, the new COVID-19 wave at the beginning of the year meant that many consumers worked from home. Convenience stores located in train stations and bus terminals were consequently impacted and recorded sales decline in the year as they rely heavily on commuters.
Coop Danmark A/S continued to lead convenience stores in 2021 thanks mainly to the company’s many Dagli'Brugsen stores. The number of Dagli'Brugsen outlets increased significantly during 2019 as Coop Danmark’s remaining 26 LokalBrugsen stores rebranded to Dagli'Brugsen.
Convenience stores are expected to continue to face increased competition from other modern grocery retailers, which are increasingly focusing on offering convenient products and have specific convenience sections with food and beverages. This will likely lead to a decline in value sales over the forecast period.
With the strong health and wellness trend in Denmark, consumers are increasingly demanding more healthy products. In order to respond to this growing demand, many retail stores already offer specific diet meals such as paleo food and drinks, as well as a wider range of drink options including coffee with organic milk and fair-trade beans, and this is set to develop further going forward.
The number of convenience store outlets is expected to decline slightly over the forecast period as competition from other categories increases. It is likely that the big chains will continue to dominate this channel thanks to their more substantial purchasing power and resources which allow them to acquire premium locations in Denmark, which is crucial for any convenience store and makes it difficult for smaller independent stores to compete.
