Executive Summary

Feb 2019
PROSPECTS
Greater degree of competition is observed in some categories in 2018

All categories recorded volume decline, but antipruritics and nappy (diaper) rash treatments showed the smallest volume losses thanks to a more competitive environment. These are products that have attracted companies in the beauty and cosmetics industry, with special emphasis on the supply of rash treatments for nappy/diaper users.

Imports of antifungals’ active ingredients plunged in 2018

After two consecutive years of positive growth rates that reached 2014 levels, imports of active ingredients for the manufacturing of topical and vaginal antifungals fell again in 2018. Among those ingredients are clotrimazol, miconazol and ketoconazol, which also go into the production of medicated shampoos.

Past price distortions result in uneven performances

Topical germicidals/antiseptics, which carries the lowest average unit price in absolute terms, recorded the least negative volume performance. Price ceilings imposed by the government on hand soap and regular shampoo during the review period encouraged Venezuelan consumers to substitute them with topical germicides, which are widely available.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Bayer leads with high-quality, trusted brands and local manufacturing facilities

Bayer de Venezuela led dermatologicals for a third consecutive year in 2018. The company offers a strong and very competitive antifungals portfolio, featuring several formats and types.

Domestic companies with accessible products improve their value shares in 2018

Industrias Pañal Express CA ranks second in dermatologicals thanks to strong leadership in nappy (diaper) rash treatments with its brand Crema Cero, which enjoys recognition in a category that had seen severe shortages in 2016 and 2017. Laboratorios Ponce CA and Laboratorios Vita SA – two domestic players – are the leaders of topical germicidals/antiseptics and antipruritics with their brands Dioxogen and Borocanfor, respectively.

One multinational company slides in the ranking

Meyer Productos Terapeúticos SA, a multinational company, dropped several positions in the dermatologicals’ ranking in 2018. The company participates in the category with one product in antifungals offering topical and vaginal variants under the brand Imazol.
