At the end of the review period, the remote environment remained heavily dominant in digital commerce in Spain. This is the result of the strong growth recorded in e-commerce in recent years, which itself is based on increasing consumer acceptance of online payments and the online shopping experience more generally.
Various Eurostat studies conducted in recent years show that the use of mobile phones in Spain is well above the EU average. Furthermore, mobile phone usage is increasing among consumers of all age groups, while mobile phone penetration among the younger population is already at 100%.
Consumer interest in smart wearables continues to increase in Spain and at the end of the review period, around one-fifth of the country’s smartphone users were already using smart watches, up from around one-sixth during the previous year. In addition, research indicates that up to one in 12 Spaniards own a smart car with its own integrated internet connection, although only one and 50 have connected consumer electronics or consumer appliances in the home.
Apparel and footwear specialist retailer Mango is investing strongly in the development of its online presence. At the end of the review period, online sales were already representing some 20% of the company’s revenues generated in Spain, and this is in line with the goals that it had previously set for 2020.
El Corte Ingles remains a reference point and byword for retailing in Spain and this makes the slow start that the iconic El Corte Ingles chain of department stores has had into the digital commerce realm somewhat disappointing. Until now, the extent of the company’s interface with digital commerce went only as far as mobile apps for remote purchases via its grocery retailing subsidiaries Supercor and Hipercor.
Recent data shows that more than half of all bank account holders in Spain are already using mobile banking. Three-fifths of Spaniards carried out at least some of their banking on mobile devices during 2019, while two-thirds used a PC for personal banking purposes.
