Dishwashers’ perceived lack of necessity

In 2018, dishwashers recorded stable retail volume growth, which was mainly driven by the built-in format. The category benefits from ongoing urbanisation, reviving sales of residential real estate and increasingly hectic lifestyles, which result in growing demand for convenience.

Economy built-in dishwashers a top priority

Built-in dishwashers was the most dynamic performer in 2018. Sales were highly related to the rise of new residential properties, mainly within more urbanised areas.

Decreasing average unit price

Falling average unit prices within dishwashing satisfied demand for cheaper appliances. The category is not driven by new product development, although some changes, such as greater energy sufficiency or new designs, were introduced; thus, older models with reduced prices became more accessible to local consumers.

Category dominated by international players

Differing from other major consumer appliances such as refrigeration appliances or home laundry appliances, dishwashers are imported into Russia, with no clear indications of any local production in the near future. Moreover, due to fluctuating demand and the perception of dishwashers as non-essential in most households, sales of dishwashers are closely linked to changes in disposable incomes.

Unclear outlook for local production

Dishwashers in Russia is far from saturation, as the appliance is still not perceived as essential in local households. With heavy financial investment into product development and older models becoming cheaper, international manufacturers can offer appliances with high-end features but are economy or lower priced.

Chinese brands become increasingly visible

Although sales of dishwashers were dominated by the leading three companies in Russia in 2018, several Chinese brands continued to increase their presence, including Midea. In addition, dishwashers under the Haier brand are being supplied to distributors across the country and are enjoying demand amongst consumers due to an acceptable price/quality ratio.
