Executive Summary

Feb 2019
PROSPECTS
Channel is sensitive to economic slowdown of 2018

Evolution of electronics and appliances demand is sensitive to changes in household revenues, which are dependent on economic activity (level of taxes and savings share). Since the great recession of 2008, macroeconomic conditions in France have deteriorated; households have had to manage expenditure, at the expense of appliances and electronics, which has triggered a sales slowdown.

Multimedia and telecommunication equipment are affected by innovation cycles and usage rates

Electronics retailing consists of sales of computers, telecommunication equipment and audio/video accessories. The latter recorded a slight decline in 2018 after the strong growth registered in 2016, whilst telecommunication equipment considerably slowed down as smartphone sales are reaching saturation in France.

Electronics and appliance specialist retailers registers positive value growth

Unlike the general trend observed during the review period, large domestic appliances recorded a stronger performance compared to that of small or light domestic appliances in 2018. With the housing market on a dynamic positive trend, this is leading households to invest in large domestic appliances.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Online retailing development changes competitive landscape

Online retailing has considerably modified the electronics and appliances retailing landscape, resulting in new pure player specialists entering with a focus on price competitiveness and extended offerings. Some players like Amazon.

Competition between retailers leads to merger strategies

Specialist retailers have significantly reinforced their value shares at the expense of modern grocery retailers. As electronics and appliance specialist retailers grow, it has led to consolidation activity, with some cooperation between retailers in terms of joint ventures in central purchasing units.

Fnac Darty and Boulanger projected to expand

Three years after the opening of a first outlet in Paris, Boulanger reached five outlets in the French capital. Competition authorities validated Boulanger’s acquisition of two points of sale previously operated by its competitor Darty.
