The second edition of the Virtual DIY-Summit will take place on 2 September 2022.

It is the world’s major event where retailers and manufacturers from the home improvement and garden centre industry have the opportunity for an exchange of views of current and future developments within the global market. This event is being jointly hosted by the leading DIY professional organisations, EDRA (European DIY-Retail Association), HIMA (Home Improvement Manufacturers Association), and ghin (Global Home Improvement Network).

Session title: DIY in 2022: Decision making when instability is the only constant

Session description: Lockdowns forced us to rethink go-to-market strategy around the purpose and vulnerability of stores. Failed parts, waiting lists and bottlenecks forced us to rethink supply strategy and what “reliable” means. Pandemic DIY novices forced us to rethink product, service, sales and retention strategy.

Demand drivers behind recent growth (and growth pains) are still there, but 2022 disruption factors include war in Europe, global inflation rates not experienced in generations, a cost of living crisis, and sustainability rising in our social consciousness, adorned by the visible teeth of incoming regulation.

What strategies do we need to rethink this time?

Date and time of the EMI session: 2 September 2022, 10.50-11.15 GMT

Name and title of speaker involved: Nick Stene, Senior Industry Manager

Only 55 companies have remained on the Fortune 500 list continuously since its inception in 1955. In that year, GM was the biggest company in the world. 70 or so years later, Wal-Mart, a discount store, is the biggest, while GM filed for bankruptcy in 2009. A generation ago, a “Kodak moment” referred to a picture-worthy moment. Today, it is widely used to describe companies that failed to adapt to market disruptions. Clearly, companies need to innovate their products and business models to survive.

Looking ahead to the future of home improvement and gardening sales, demand drivers in 2021 have created a solid uplift for the year. The biggest driver of this is the demographic shift with more Millennials entering the market. This looks to be a lasting influence across countries. That said, inflation and a vicious cycle of shortages and supply disruptions are expected to be a limiting factor in 2022.
