Session title: Decision making when instability is the only constant

Session description: We learned in 2020 that most of what we “knew” about forecasting was both flawed and highly vulnerable to shocks. In 2021, we learned our thinking around the purpose of stores was equally incomplete. Then 2022 was the year that taught very harsh lessons in margin and balance sheet management - the pain of giving in to commercial “FOMO” and failing to pass cost through in good time reverberates still in 2023. In this presentation, Euromonitor International provides an overview of the scale of pressure faced in 2022, the responses that made the biggest difference, sharing how related consumer behaviors have changed in the last couple of years, and how that is translating into the home furnishings and cookware industries. Attendees will leave with pragmatic sector benchmarks, and they will see how rapidly the sector is pivoting to prepare for the next harsh lesson.

Only 55 companies have remained on the Fortune 500 list continuously since its inception in 1955. In that year, GM was the biggest company in the world. 70 or so years later, Wal-Mart, a discount store, is the biggest, while GM filed for bankruptcy in 2009. A generation ago, a “Kodak moment” referred to a picture-worthy moment. Today, it is widely used to describe companies that failed to adapt to market disruptions. Clearly, companies need to innovate their products and business models to survive.

Looking ahead to the future of home improvement and gardening sales, demand drivers in 2021 have created a solid uplift for the year. The biggest driver of this is the demographic shift with more Millennials entering the market. This looks to be a lasting influence across countries. That said, inflation and a vicious cycle of shortages and supply disruptions are expected to be a limiting factor in 2022.
