Comparative economic stabilisation predetermines flat growth

Fine wine/champagne and spirits continued to register moderate retail current value growth in 2018 thanks to increasing financial confidence among consumers. While luxury alcoholic drinks typically is less affected than alcoholic drinks in general during periods of economic downturn, notable price increases for imported drinks and unfavourable financial conditions for middle class consumers negatively affected the volume dynamics of luxury fine and spirits in recent years.

Online sales booming but still illegal

Online sales of spirits and wines remained prohibited in 2018 but this channel increasingly attracted affluent consumers. It was expected that online sales would be allowed from the beginning of 2018, however the start date was changed to the beginning of 2019.

International players dominate

High brand awareness and recognition as well as diversified brand portfolios remained key to the leading players’ positions in fine wine/champagne and spirits. In 2018, Moët Hennessy Whitehall Rus OOO remained the leading player thanks to a solid brand mix in the main luxury alcohol categories such as cognac and champagne.

Affluent consumers prefer imported drinks

Sales of fine wine and spirits products to middle class consumers started to recover as economic conditions eased. Historically, affluent Russians considered imported products as more refined and elite than local ones.
