While demand for fish and seafood through retail in Russia remained positive in 2021, the rate of growth through the channel slowed down in comparison with 2020. The dynamics of the dominant fish drive the entire category’s development.
Despite reduced purchasing power amongst many Russians, demand for crustaceans in particular, as well as molluscs and cephalopods continued to post higher retail volume growth rates compared to fish. However, this is due to their low per capita consumption levels, as these products remain an expensive niche in Russia.
The overall outlook for the development of fish and seafood in Russia is positive over the forecast period, with increasing demand expected for all three channels of foodservice (predicted to be the most dynamic performer), institutional and retail. The main growth driver is expected to be the expanding offer and the investment made into local production, efforts which should lead to some stabilisation of prices whilst increasing the quality due to greater competition.
The development of aquaculture shows positive dynamics each year in Russia. The extension of agricultural support measures to fish farmers, primarily concessional loans, has allowed enterprises to obtain financing, while the distribution of fish sites has opened up access to waters.
