Arrivals from China overtook those from the UK in 2011, and the source market was currently second in terms of inbound arrivals, after New Zealand in 2017. In the same year, inbound trips from China recorded 8% growth, taking the total number of trips to 1.3 million. This represented 109% growth in arrival numbers overall since the start of the review period in 2012, and a 16% CAGR in terms of number of trips over the review period.
Arrivals to Australia is expected to record a 6% CAGR to reach 11.3 million trips by 2022. By 2020, China is anticipated to become the largest source market for Australia, overtaking long-time leader New Zealand. Arrivals from China are furthermore expected to surpass those from Western Europe by 2022. Over the forecast period, arrivals from China look set to reach two million, with 53% period growth during 2017-2022 or a 9% CAGR in terms of number of trips.
