Inbound arrivals had another year of growth at 3% in 2017. This was lower than in 2016, which recorded 9% growth, although nonetheless still quite significant. The reputation which Croatia has built over the last few years continues to attract newcomers from different parts of the globe. The country received an initial boost at the beginning of the review period due to the crisis in Greece and instability in North Africa and Turkey. However, many tourists who cancelled plans to visit those countries and turned to Croatia were satisfied and the country’s positive image continued to spread. The expansion of inbound arrivals is the result of the positive image built by visitors, and numerous online travel portals.
The number of inbound tourists to Croatia is expected to record a CAGR of 3% over the forecast period. New flight connections with different source markets will likely continue to expand, and the new airport in the capital city will be a major factor in connecting distant markets. As a response to increased touristic demand, Croatia has made major investments which contributed to lodging capacity, and an increase in quality which can mostly be observed in hotels. These investments are also backed up by marketing activities positioning Croatia as one of the top summer holiday destinations in Europe. As new investments are expected to continue, the quality of the touristic offer is set to increase, resulting in repeat visits by tourists as well as a point of reference to potential tourists. The major threat to Croatia in the forecast period is the recovery of Greece and similar Mediterranean destinations. One of the major points which helped Croatia in the review period was the stability and high level of security. However, Greece, which is a major Croatian competitor, is recovering from its economic turmoil. The same could be said for destinations in North Africa.
