Inbound arrivals registered strong volume growth due to the ongoing liberalisation of e-visa policies. In 2017, the number of countries to which India provided e-visas increased by 11 countries to reach 161. Furthermore, the validity of the e-visa was increased from 30 to 60 days. In addition, the length of the application process was increased from 30 to 120 days, in order to allow more time for tourists to plan their trips. Finally, India allowed double entry e-tourist and e-business visas to cover the duration while triple entry was allowed for e-medical visas. Prior to this additional liberalisation in 2017, each visa carried only single entry allowance.
The number of inbound arrivals is predicted to grow healthily over the forecast period. Growth is expected to be driven by economic and infrastructure developments in India, which will make it easier for tourists to travel to and within India. The government is working on improvements to air connectivity, road conditions and networks and accommodation to attract more tourists in the forecast period.
