Inbound arrivals grew by 25% in 2017 to reach 15 million trips. This was partly the result of efforts from the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Tourism in Indonesia working together to open up more direct flights between the country and other markets. For example the number of Chinese tourists visiting Indonesia increased after the opening of direct flight services from Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado to eight cities in China. This resulted in inbound arrivals from China increasing significantly in 2017 compared to the previous year. Apart from that some regulations pertaining to restrictions on tourist arrivals such as Visa access have been eased for more countries.
Indonesia is set to continue its improvement and development plans in order to ensure it can compete globally. The development plan will focus on attracting inbound arrivals from 15 key source markets which are: Singapore, Malaysia, China, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, the US, the UK, India, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Russia.
