Whilst the Mexican peso became weaker against the US dollar, tourism in Mexico experienced another excellent year, receiving more international and domestic tourists in 2017. Travelling to Mexico and within the country is cheaper for international tourists mainly from the US and Canada, but also from Europe and Asia. The latter, as a region, has the highest increase in rates of inbound tourists – from countries such as India, China, Malaysia and the Philippines, whilst tourists from Japan and South Korea remain stable as the main source countries for people interested in traveling to Mexico. On the other hand, more domestic tourists are deciding to travel within the country and enjoy some of the multiple options at very good prices too. The decision to travel in Mexico instead of travelling outside the country was influenced mainly by the increase of expenditure that the expensive US dollar represents and also by a feeling of nationalism.
Mexico is expecting to become one of the top five destinations globally in terms of arrivals after several years of positive performance driven by the government’s strong efforts to promote the destination and develop the industry along with several private investors. One important opportunity to attract more tourists will be with new attractions in new or current popular destinations, such as the new historic site Xcabal in Quintana Roo and the underground theatre at Teotihuacán. Another expected opportunity will be the new airport in Mexico City to increase connectivity; it is expected to start operations in 2020. The arrival of more cruises to other ports besides those in Quintana Roo, such as Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, clearly has potential to boost inbound arrivals. Major threats could be an increase of insecurity or a slowdown of investments in lodging or infrastructure for larger groups and prospects. Over the forecast period inbound arrivals is set to record a CAGR of 3% to reach 43.4 million inbound tourists by 2022.
