Due to the strong currency of the Swiss franc, inbound arrivals to Switzerland decreased by 1% in 2016. After several years of strong growth, visitors from the Asian continent registered a slowdown in the number of trips in 2016 compared with 2015. The new requirement for biometric fingerprint data for visas since November 2015 was one of the key factors which led to the decrease of inbound Chinese tourists.
Over the forecast period, the number of inbound arrivals is expected to increase at a CAGR of 4%, with 11 million trips expected in 2022. The number of domestic trips is also expected to grow at a CAGR of 2%, reaching 10 million trips in 2022. The exchange rate of the Swiss franc against the euro is expected to be stable over the forecast period. As a result, the strength of currency which caused the decrease of tourists since the beginning of 2015 is expected to diminish over the long run.
