Executive Summary

Sep 2017
TRENDS

The US federal government operates the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board (TTAB), which was established in 2003 in order to promote the country’s tourism industry. The TTAB’s importance to the US travel industry is minor relative to the critical role played by other countries’ tourism boards in promoting tourism. Rather than promoting the US directly, the TTAB spearheads a variety of initiatives to spur tourism in the US, ranging from specific legislative recommendations that encourage short-term growth in both domestic and inbound tourism as well as national tourism strategy briefings that are intended to bolster long-term growth of the US travel industry. For example, in June 2017 the TTAB submitted a list of recommendations to the US Secretary of Commerce that included the development of a new 10-year travel and tourism strategy with a strong focus on the augmentation of international visitors spending in the US. Recommendation topics also incorporated Global Competitiveness, such as support for Brand USA, and development of public-private partnership initiatives. The TTAB published its most recent National Travel and Tourism Strategy in May 2012, but recommendations for a new strategy are currently being developed.

PROSPECTS

Inbound arrivals to the US are expected to decline by 1% in 2018, largely as a result of continued political and social unrest in the country. Uncertainty surrounding the government’s immigration policies as well as enforcement of executive travel bans also deters potential foreign visitors. These, combined with the potential for a large-scale terrorist attack or series of attacks domestically or abroad, could instil fear into potential tourists’ minds and deter them from travelling. Arrivals are projected to return to positive growth after 2018 to reach 86.1 million in 2022, reflecting a 2% CAGR from 2017-2022. As the political and social climate in the US stabilises over the long term, the US should become more inviting to foreign visitors.
