During the COVID-19 pandemic, food and drink e-commerce was one of the biggest winners in Finnish retailing. This was due to the fact that demand for grocery products increased considerably whilst consumer foodservice outlets were closed down initially in Finland following the outbreak of the first wave of COVID-19 in the Spring of 2020.
Amidst growing consumer concern about excessive food waste, several online food retailers stepped in with mobile apps through which consumers can purchase surplus food at reduced prices. One such retailer in Finland is Fiksu Ruoka, a local company, while another is Swedish Matsmart.
The popularity of food and drink e-commerce has benefited domestic players in Finland, increasing the domestic share of e-commerce overall. Apart from ordering alcohol from abroad (which is a legal grey area) the category is heavily dominated by domestic players, notably Kesko, S Group and Alko.
In 2021, Norwegian food and drink e-commerce player Oda arrived in Finland. The company opened a warehouse in Vantaa and delivers a range of groceries and fresh produce to consumers in the capital region.
Despite the surge in the popularity of food and drink e-commerce during the COVID-19 pandemic, profitability remains an important issue for companies offering this service. Delivery charges are relatively high for home delivery options, which were extremely popular during the COVID-19 pandemic as many consumers needed to isolate, whilst click and collect is a much cheaper option for retailers and customers.
The popularity of food and drink commerce is expected to boost sales in other types e-commerce. Consumers who buy groceries online, also purchase non-grocery items such as household items, tissues, toiletries, and other beauty and personal care products.
