Due to its already huge size, food and drink e-commerce was unlikely to achieve the same outstanding value growth in 2021 than in 2020. Due to the prominence of click-and-collect, known locally as “drive”, France is a unique case when it comes to food and drink e-commerce.
Other than click-and-collect, another category managed to progress at the same pace in 2020-2021: home delivery of food and drinks by virtue of the explosion of quick commerce. Before 2020, the home delivery of groceries in France had never really managed to reach the same levels as in other Western European countries, notably the UK.
Nothing seems to change the success of the main operators of click-and-collect in France, with growth only varying between them in either percentage or actual terms. The context is so favourable for click-and-collect that its six major operators (Leclerc, Carrefour, Intermarché, Auchan, Course U and Chronodrive) all posted double-digit value growth in 2021.
Experts are optimistic about the outlook for food and drink e-commerce in France. Admittedly, thanks to the progression of the vaccination campaign in France and the likely ebbing in the COVID-19 pandemic, there are unlikely to be any further lockdowns in France in the short term, which will result in lower growth in click-and-collect over 2022-2026 compared to the two atypical years of 2020 and 2021.
However, one final barrier for the development of pedestrian click-and-collect could be their higher price positioning compared to large supermarkets, hypermarkets and mainly discounters and the reluctance of many consumers to pay an extra cost. In addition, even if there is a significant amount of empty retail space available to launch pedestrian drive collection points due to the many bankruptcies in non-grocery retailers, there will be a battle for the best strategic locations in 2022 in French cities.
Even if home delivery of food and drink continues to rocket in France, many local experts have doubts about the sustainability of its development and predict a full-scale price war between the 30 players that are now trying to recruit and make consumers loyal by any means.
