Food and drink internet retailing remained the most dynamic internet retailing area in 2018. Despite strong growth, the area is still emerging within internet retailing and represented only a minor share of overall value sales in 2018.
Food and drink internet retailing is driven chiefly by an urban consumer base, with sales mainly being limited to the largest cities. Higher incomes, a younger population and busy lifestyles are driving demand for food and drink retailing in urban areas.
Packaged food dominates online grocery purchases, with nearby stores being preferred for purchases of fresh products, where customers can pick the products themselves according to their preference. Beverages such as alcoholic drinks and soft drinks are the second and third most important areas.
There are only a few large chained companies specialising in selling groceries online or with a substantial e-commerce presence along with store-based retailing. The largest chained food and drink internet retailer in Slovakia is Tesco Stores, with close to zero competitors delivering the same range of products to a large number of locations.
Food and drink internet retailing is expected to remain one of the fastest growing areas over the forecast period but is unlikely to play a major role in overall grocery sales by 2023. In addition to smaller and more specialised food/drink specialists, only a few grocery retailing brands have invested heavily in logistics, IT and advertising to establish fully-fledged online grocery shops with wide-ranging delivery areas.
In 2018, grocery retailers specialising in organic food, locally-sourced products, products with added health benefits, alcoholic drinks and products that are not well-represented in grocery stores mushroomed, seeing a major rise in value sales. Local farmers and food producers use internet retailing to sell their products as they often find it impossible to get their ranges on chained stores’ shelves.
