Food and drink e-commerce registered an exponential rise in value sales during the height of the pandemic in 2020. In 2021, with society opening up, current value sales fell, but were still significantly higher than before the onset of COVID-19.
Food and drink e-commerce is mainly provided by Switzerland’s main retailers, Coop and Migros, and both companies have made significant investments in the online landscape and are reaping the benefits. However, the landscape is becoming more varied and competition is increasing.
In 2021, Switzerland also saw the emergence of quick commerce, that is online shopping with the promise of instant delivery. This business model emerged primarily in food and drink e-commerce, with the launch of domestic player Stash, a delivery company providing food and drink deliveries within ten minutes.
Consumers who tried food and drink e-commerce for the first time in 2020, as a result of the pandemic, were made aware of the benefits of food and drink e-commerce in terms of convenience. Although this was previously a niche channel in Switzerland, food and drink e-commerce will, over the forecast period, become a significant channel in Swiss retailing.
Although food and drink e-commerce has seen some of the strongest online growths in recent years, before the onset of the pandemic, food and drink e-commerce was still in a relatively early stage of development, with many local consumers preferring to visit physical stores for groceries. In addition, food and drink delivery, notably dairy, frozen or refrigerated products, is much more complex than for other products, and hypermarkets and supermarkets only offered delivery options in very limited areas.
Whereas during the pandemic, there was some difficulties with obtaining delivery slots, this will not be accepted by consumers during the forecast period, and they will switch to other providers in an increasingly competitive landscape. In addition, technology will continue to offer more innovative solutions for food and grocery e-commerce over the forecast period.
