COVID-19 restrictions continued to provide a boost to demand for food preparation appliances during 2021, even if retail current value sales expanded at a significantly slower rate than in 2020 – when they reached their highest rate in well over a decade. The fact that pandemic restrictions were tightened in Russia during late 2021 provided additional support to demand for these products.
Although the also saw an acceleration in the rate of retail current value sales growth during 2020 and demand remained robust in 2021, Juicers did not benefit from COVID-19 to same extent as blenders, food processors and mixers. Local consumers are becoming increasingly concerned about the sugar content of fruit juices – even freshly squeezed ones.
The competitive landscape in food preparation appliances is highly fragmented, with leader SEB Groupe the only player with a retail volume share of more than 10% in 2021. Its Moulinex and Tefal brands are well known to local consumers and widely distributed.
While the rate of growth in retail current value sales of food preparation appliances will continue to slow in 2022 and 2023, it will remain robust throughout the forecast period. Ongoing significant growth in unit pricing will play a significant role in this, with rising raw material costs a major driver of this.
Multifunctional food preparation appliances that blur the lines between mixers, blenders and food processors are set to grow in popularity during the forecast period. Multifunctional appliances can save consumers both money and space, as they only have to buy (and store) a single appliance, in addition to being more convenient.
During 2020, e-commerce surged past electronics and appliance specialist retailers to becoming the dominant distribution channel for food preparation appliances. With physical stores closed for a significant part of year and consumers spending much more time at home, they shopped online in growing numbers.
