Executive Summary

Mar 2019
PROSPECTS
Sports drinks accounts for the highest value share and energy drinks witnesses the highest volume growth

Fortified/functional beverages accounted for around one fifth of health and wellness value sales in 2018, highly driven by sports drinks. Retail value sales increased overall in 2018, but the value growth was considerably lower than it was in 2017.

FF fruit/vegetable juice trends downward, whilst maintaining growth

FF fruit/vegetable juice saw solid retail value growth over the review period, despite having been negatively impacted by a long slump in the juice category due to negative perceptions about its sugar content. However, sales growth of FF fruit/vegetable juice steadily trended downward, led by lowering growth of 100% juice, which accounts for half of the FF juice category.

Growth prospects for 100% juice and FF nectars are set to be limited

FF 100% juice and FF nectars are projected to experience negligible constant value growth over the forecast period, whilst FF juice drinks (up to 24% juice) is expected to maintain negative growth. Overall, FF fruit/vegetable juice will lose ground over the forecast period in line with the reduced prospects of the juice category.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Donga Ostuka remains the leader, threatened by Coca-Cola Korea

Donga Ostuka competed fiercely with Coca-Cola Korea in FF beverages over the review period, regaining the leading position in 2018 after losing it in the previous year. Donga Ostuka sales came from Pocari Sweat solely in FF sports drinks, whilst Coca-Cola Korea sales drew from FF bottled water, FF energy drinks, FF fruit/vegetable juice and FF sports drinks.

Coca-Cola’s sports drink Toreta generates remarkable sales

Coca-Cola Korea enjoyed remarkable sales in 2017 and 2018 from Toreta in FF sports drinks. The brand contributed to the expansion of FF sports drinks, although it was launched in 2016.
