Executive Summary

May 2018
PROSPECTS
High foreign exchange prices continue to hit the category hard in 2017

Increasingly high foreign currency prices are to blame for the loss of variety and the lack of development in this category. While most of the products are imported, there are artisanal brands of gluten-free products, such as free from baked goods and free from gluten pasta, which emerged during the review period.

Free from products are not meeting the needs of the diabetic population

According to the National Federation of Diabetes Associations (Fenadiabates – Federación Nacional de Asociaciones y Unidades de Diabetes), in Venezuela there are between 1.8 and 2.

Free from gluten products are scarce and expensive

Venezuelans are more familiar with the concept of lactose intolerance than gluten intolerance. There are no official statistics regarding the incidence of coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, and there is no law requiring manufacturers to state the presence of gluten on product labels.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Universal CA leads an ever shrinking category

As free from gluten is the most important free from category, followed by free from lactose, the most important company is Universal CA – which represents exclusively the Spanish player Casa Santiveri in Venezuela – followed by companies present in free from lactose special baby milk formula, such as Abbott Laboratories CA and Nestlé Venezuela SA. Overall, international companies involved in free from products suffered a decrease in value share in 2016, which stabilised in 2017 amid very low levels of activity.

A lack of wheat and costly imports shape competition in 2017

The domestic producer of Pasta Oro free from gluten pasta, Corporacion SBE 3750 CA, posted the largest loss of value share in 2017, which can be tied to the monopoly on the importation of wheat held by the government. The lack of wheat flour can explain the erratic presence of wheat-based products from artisanal bread to speciality foods.
