Fruits recorded a marginally more positive performance in 2021 via retail compared to the previous year, when the category was negatively impacted by a shortage of migrant workers due to the closure of borders a result of the pandemic (in March 2020, the entry of foreign labour was banned), although this scenario continued to have an impact heading into the following year. Labour shortages encouraged some players to cut acreage or were forced to increase employees’ wages.
Emerging niche fruits such as cranberries/blueberries, which carry much higher unit prices, and which had witnessed dynamic growth rates over the review period, experienced a significant slowdown in demand due to the switch by local consumers to more affordable fruits in 2021. However, in general, the demand and interest in fresh berries, especially blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries, is growing in Russia, supported by improving supply and the development and availability of these fruits in modern grocery retailers.
Fruits is expected to record a solid performance over the forecast period, with retail volume sales predicted to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2022. However, it is important to note that the dynamics of the category are highly dependent on the economic situation.
Organic produce held marginal share of fruits roots in Russia at the end of the review period. While this segment is in infancy, growing interest from environmentally-conscious consumers is likely to support further growth over the forecast period.
