Beverage packaging has a largely positive forecast with retail volume sales due to reach 1.3 billion units by 2018, fuelled especially by emerging regions. PET and liquid cartons will see strong volume growth in soft drinks, while glass and metal will expand in beer and carbonates. Yet against a challenging economic backdrop, brand owners need to work together with packagers to meet consumer needs for good value and convenience, as well as to stand out on crowded shelves.

Despite a subtle slowdown in global real GDP growth over 2013, retail volume sales of beverage packaging saw 3% growth which translates into some 32 billion extra units. Over 2013-2018, beverage producers will have to cater to savvier consumers looking for value and convenience, by leveraging pack innovation.
With a significant position held in the key bottled water, carbonates and juice categories, PET bottles are likely to benefit from high unit volume gains as well as a wide range of opportunities for new developments.
Although still outperformed by glass, metal packaging has seen notable innovation. Printing and connectivity were used to bond with end consumers in carbonates; can sizing conveyed better value in energy drinks and bolder novelties aimed to improve consumers’ experience in beer.
In beer, spirits and bottled water, the history and premium image of glass continues to assist brand owners in strengthening brand identity and consumer loyalty; yet technological progress endorsed by major drinks players also enable glass to be increasingly seen as forward looking and resourceful.
While single-serve formats will bode well for flexible aluminium/plastic in instant coffee and other hot drinks, a need for differentiation in fresh ground coffee will create opportunities for pouches and folding cartons.
Emerging regions will be instrumental to beverage packaging growth over 2013-2018, with Asia Pacific alone holding 64% of unit volume increase over this period. Liquid cartons will be among the fastest growing pack types with key progress to be made in juice and RTD tea.
