HDPE bottles increased unit volumes in 2016 and are forecast to continue to see further growth. While packaged food leads the way for HDPE bottles, driven by the strong performance of drinking yoghurt globally, laundry care and hair care also remain key applications for the pack type. Developing markets continue drive unit volumes, with China and India the largest contributors to growth. As HDPE bottles face rising competition from other pack types, more than ever innovation remains key.

In 2016, the volume of HDPE bottles sold through retail reached almost 97 billion units globally, up by 2% on 2015. This was driven by a rise in consumption in all key applications for the pack type, particularly in dairy, the largest product category for HDPE bottles but also the largest contributor to HDPE bottles growth in 2016.
While developed regions continue to stagnate or decline, emerging regions are the ones generating volume growth of HDPE bottles, led by Asia Pacific within which China and India are the largest contributors.
In food, HDPE bottles gain from the rise in consumption of drinking yoghurt, particularly in China and the US. Rising health awareness and convenience are the main drivers behind category growth.
Shampoos - the key application for HDPE bottles in beauty - offer strong growth for the pack type as consumers shift from single-use formats to larger family-sized shampoos. Rising urbanisation and disposable income are driving this growth in emerging markets, led by India and Brazil.
In home care, laundry detergents continue to be the largest application for HDPE bottles globally however pockets of growth exist in other categories such as in surface care in Eastern Europe, dishwashing in Asia Pacific and bleach in Latin America.
HDPE bottles face competition from other pack types across most product categories where the pack type is present, with PET bottles the strongest competitor, albeit from a lower base.
