Executive Summary

Jul 2018
PROSPECTS
The supply and variety of gum is at its lowest point in recent history

After the exit of the largest domestic brand in 2016, gum is a marginal category in Venezuela. In 2018, the availability of gum continued to be limited to a handful of imported brands.

Chewing gum is the only choice for most consumers

Peppermint, spearmint and strawberry are the most demanded flavours of gum, with the top two perceived to help improve and maintain fresh breath. Children prefer fruit and acid flavours such as strawberry, cherry and tropical fruits.

Available gum supply in Venezuela shows no segmentation

Most brands competing in gum are positioned in the standard segment with no substantial supply of premium brands to cater to specific needs such as sugar free, fortified with calcium or whitening. In Venezuela, the sugar free segment had virtually only one brand for many years until Cadbury Adams SA took Trident off the local market.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
A Brazilian brand takes the leading position in 2018

Grupo Roraima assumed the leading position in 2018 with its brand of chewing gum, Icekiss, made in Brazil by Cory Alimentos. Grupo Roraima found this business opportunity after gum in Venezuela lost its most important players in 2015 and 2016.

Gum sees few possibilities for supply growth

Gum will continue to see limited room for expansion given the diminished presence of brands. Gum is comprised entirely of imported products that must be purchased at the black market exchange rate.

Demand for gum will remain limited

Gum has come to have a low priority among consumers. In the face of tight budgets, Venezuelans tend to allocate their incomes to vital product categories whilst gum is regarded as among the least essential.
