Increasingly, health and beauty trends are marching in lockstep in Costa Rica. Quarantine has created time for many consumers to focus on their inner health, driving up demand for supplements and vitamins; this has seen specialist retailers like GNC enjoy exceptional growth in 2021.
The pandemic has shifted work habits in Costa Rica, and many employees continue to work from home. This has typically meant far more time spent in front of screens, which in turn has led to greater awareness of vision problems among this consumer cohort.
During 2020, even though pharmacies were allowed to stay open during lockdown, many consumers opted to avoid them for fear of contagion. A not insignificant share of sales shifted online, with consumers using third party delivery apps to access pharmaceutical purchases.
Health and beauty specialists are expected to strengthen their online presence, using online sales to widen consumer bases and drive value growth. Unlike apparel and footwear, these are products that consumers do not need to try on and can feel confident purchasing without seeing the product first.
Beauty specialist retailers are threatened by the increasingly credible private label beauty and personal care offer from modern grocery retailers. Specialists will therefore need to do more to differentiate themselves from low-price competitors, and in particular find ways of adding value to their offer.
Demand for preventative health products is expected to remain strong over the forecast period. Sales of these products exploded at the beginning of the pandemic, and although the roll out of the vaccine has weakened some demand, consumer anxiety about the possible resurgence of the virus remains in place.
