In 2021, health and beauty specialist retailers registered constant growth in sales, with growth slightly slowed down compared to the previous year. The closure of a significant number of outlets in 2020 and 2021 is part of this, with smaller independent pharmacies hit especially hard by the events of the pandemic.
Chemists/pharmacies (there are no drugstores/parapharmacies in Estonia) saw the strongest performance in 2021. In the previous year, home seclusion and self-isolation led to a significant reduction in the occurrence of the seasonal flu, hence sales of pharmaceutical drugs, OTC drugs and dietary supplements recommended in the treatment of such ailments fell sharply.
Optical goods stores saw the sharpest decline in sales during the first year of the pandemic. In part, the drop in demand reflected the fact that consumers were going out less, and choosing to delay replacing or upgrading optical glasses until the economy was fully reopened.
Health and beauty specialist retailers are set to a gradual recovery in sales over the forecast period, with slower than anticipated growth in 2022 and picking up speed from 2023. The channel is set to see solid growth in value terms over the forecast period, largely because of the end of the pandemic and the reopening of the economy.
Chemists/pharmacies are set to see the strongest growth over the forecast period. This is unsurprising, as the health crisis has greatly increased consumer awareness.
Post-pandemic, the chemists/pharmacies channel is also set to see significant upheaval as a result of legislation enacted in 2020, that is aimed decentralising pharmacy chains. The main point which is set to impact performance of the whole channel is related to the ownership rights of pharmacies.
