In 2021, health and beauty specialist retailers barely managed to offset their losses seen in 2020 due to a disparate performance across the channel. Beauty specialist retailers initially appeared to have enjoyed appreciable recovery but failed to make up for the double-digit declines in value sales in 2020.
Beauty specialist retailers enjoyed appreciable recovery in 2021 although this was unable to offset the decimation in sales seen in 2020, when such outlets were forced to close as they were considered non-essential stores. In 2020-2021, the adverse economic situation suppressed consumer confidence and led many French people to reduce their discretionary spending, with demand for some types of cosmetics collapsing as spending was focused on daily essentials such as food and beverages and home care.
Although the majority of chemists/pharmacies suffered from the aforementioned drop of the annual autumn and winter pathologies, operators of chained chemists/pharmacies absorbed the shock of the pandemic in 2020 better than their independent counterparts and therefore often fared better. Their more significant financial resources enabled them to adapt more quickly and effectively to sanitary restrictions whilst offering essential items at more affordable prices.
In the short term, sales of eye care are likely to return to normal in optical goods stores. Sales of DD lenses, spectacles and sunglasses could benefit in 2022-2023 from French consumers who saved money during lockdown and who will be looking to self-indulge, especially for sunglasses.
One chain, Optical Center, at least will be better equipped than others to face the challenges likely to be faced by optical good stores over the forecast period. Some 30 years after its launch, this chain could capture the leadership of the channel in 2022 if it continues to grow at the same pace seen in recent years.
The great challenge of health and beauty specialist retailers in the coming years will be the ability of this “selective channel” for cosmetics to recover, especially as it was already on the wane for most of the review period. The number of beauty specialist retailer outlets is likely to continue declining due to the pressures faced mainly by independent retailers, notably those located in expensive city centre locations.
