Given that chemists/pharmacists represent nearly three quarters of the category retail value share, most of the positive impact on health and beauty specialist retailers stemmed from the increased current retail value growth from chemists/pharmacies as well as drugstores/parapharmacies (double-digit). These channels benefitted from COVID-19 as they experienced increased sales in OTC medicines, masks, and hand sanitisers/ gels.
Despite a set back at the beginning of 2021 in which the brand temporarily closed nearly half of its 49 outlets, Normal (the only brand in drugstores/parapharmacies in Norway) continued its strong growth, making up for the lost sales. The retailer’s low pricing strategy, high-density network, and convenient locations (typically in or near commercial centres) is valued by customers, especially during a time when consumers are less willing to travel for their shopping.
Within health and beauty specialist retailers, beauty specialist retailers experienced the strongest current retail value decline in 2020. Many brands closed their doors from 13 March to 14 April 2020 as a precautionary measure against the pandemic, with reduced footfall in shopping centres between March-May further depressing sales.
In the beginning of the forecast period, health and beauty specialist retailers is set to experience stronger current retail value growth as beauty specialist retailers and optical goods stores begin to recover, before very slightly normalising through the end of the forecast period. In terms of sites/outlets, a reduction in the number of physical outlets for beauty specialist retailers and vitamins and dietary supplements specialist retailers is set to continue in the forecast period due to a myriad of reasons.
While the high development of e-commerce medicine sales due to COVID-19 will continue to grow the e-commerce share of chemists/pharmacies, in-store sales will remain the majority in the forecast period. Added in-store services, like the introduction of flu vaccine inoculation in 2020, and the dense network of outlets is set to limit the move of sales online as such stores are already easily accessible and convenient already.
With the development of e-commerce set to intensify in the forecast period, the impact on health and beauty specialist retailers will vary based on product offer. Beauty specialist retailers and vitamins and dietary supplements specialist retailers will both particularly suffer from cross-border e-commerce as the custom of ordering from Chinese platforms (which offer branded items at discounted prices) is expected to continue.
