Consumers in Slovakia were increasingly interested in healthy living in 2020, with the COVID-19 pandemic motivating them to improve the quality of food and drinks they consumed. This led to rising demand for organic, locally-sourced and naturally healthy products.
The government introduced border controls from 13 March. People were advised to avoid social contact where possible and limit visiting family and friends.
In 2020, some manufacturers reacted more than others in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications. For example, McCarter, a major juice manufacturer in Slovakia, decided to focus more on products such as other dairy alternatives (products fortified with probiotic cultures) and postponed the launch of product innovations within the premium beverages segment, as it would be very difficult to support them with marketing activities, and instead focused on consolidating its market position.
In terms of distribution, supermarkets and hypermarkets continued to lead and strengthened their distribution share during 2020 as consumers visited retail stores less often but left with larger baskets and preferred buying multipacks, large packs sizes or in bulk. These stores gained market share from traditional grocery channels, including grocery specialists retailers and vending, as well as from institutional sales and foodservice as many Slovaks stayed at home as schools and restaurants were closed to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Foodservice outlets closed for almost three months in 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (from 6 May restaurants were able to open for business on outside terraces, while a full reopening took place on 20 May), which strongly impacted the performance of foodservice outlets such as cafés and restaurants. At the same time, limitations on the operation of retail outlets were established (limited opening hours, number of people per outlet size) and distributors (particularly non-grocery).
E-commerce is set to continue generating growing consumer interest over the forecast period; however, players will need to improve logistics, expand into new regions of Slovakia and improve delivery times. This will take time and significant investment, but the channel is expected to perform well nonetheless.
