Herbal/traditional products were largely unaffected by COVID-19 and moderate current value growth is expected to in 2021. Herbal/traditional products lost out to dietary supplements as a result of COVID-19, with prolific media coverage highlighting the benefits of certain supplements.
International companies Bionorica and Engelhard Arzneimittel are well-established in herbal/traditional products in Ukraine, with early entry an important factor for their success as well as their well-known brands Sinupret and Prospan respectively. Bionorica remains the leader in 2021, due to its focus only on herbal medicines.
Within herbal/traditional products, products for coughs, colds and sleeping disorders are the most popular in Ukraine with herbal/traditional cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies. Such conditions are not viewed as too serious, and many consumers believe it is possible to help their symptoms with products with fewer side-effects, which they consider to be natural.
Herbal/traditional products will register moderate constant value growth over the forecast period. All the same, as herbal/traditional products is a sizeable product area, Ukrainian consumers will continue to turn to herbal/traditional products over the forecast period, inspired by a higher awareness of health and wellbeing and the need to take the correct products and supplements in order to stay as strong and healthy as possible.
Whereas at the end of the review period many Ukrainians favoured OTC and Rx medicines, including chemical-based products such as antibiotics, over the forecast period consumers are expected to gradually move back towards more natural consumer health products, in line with the evolving trend in developed markets. In recent years some non-herbal OTC medicines, especially Analgin and Paracetamol, received negative publicity, and recalls are not uncommon.
Herbal/traditional cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies will continue to be the largest product area. However, COVID-19 could have a long-lasting dampening effect on value sales.
